Officeworks - Biodiversity
Officeworks recognises the importance of biodiversity in sustaining vital ecosystems. Officeworks is helping to address Biodiversity loss through its People and Planet Positive 2025 Plan commitments of planting two million plants on behalf of its customers and to have zero deforestation in its supply chain by 2025.
To support this, by December 2025, all products sold and procured by Officeworks that contain paper and wood must demonstrate that they are free from deforestation. This can be done via Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certification which requires all paper sourced to be 100 per cent recycled, made from fast growing fibres (with evidence that they have been harvested legally and sustainably) or via additional due diligence or responsible forestry initiatives the supplier undertakes to ensure there is no deforestation associated.
Since 2017, in partnership with Greening Australia, Officeworks has planted over 1.5 million plants and restored over 1,990 hectares of land across the country as part of its Restoring Australia program.
In 2024, Officeworks’ planting efforts focused on revitalising habitat by planting native species and rehabilitating critically endangered vegetation.
For example, Officeworks are planting in the Eyre Peninsula in South Australia, which is a biodiversity hotspot, and home to 1,900 native plant species, 40 of which are endemic to the region. Planting here is restoring the critically endangered Sheoak Grassy Woodlands ecological community while recreating habitat for species such as the Southern Hairy-nosed Wombat.
This year, over 55,000 plants were planted on behalf of customers.
In 2025, Officeworks will continue to identify and assess all nature-related dependencies, impacts, risks and opportunities to understand where else in the supply chain it can work to protect biodiversity.
