First Nations Artist – Kyralee Shields
As a business, Kmart is committed to fostering a culturally inclusive and respectful environment, including by supporting the diverse communities in which it operates.
Due to the size and scale of its business, Kmart has a unique opportunity to celebrate great Indigenous artists culture and make Indigenous-designed products widely accessible to all Australians.
In 2024, Kmart has continued to do this by finding strategic partnerships that engage Indigenous artists, working with them to amplify their storytelling and art through exclusive products available in-store and online at Kmart.
In April, Kmart launched its latest collaboration with Dharug and Darkinjung artist Kyralee Shields to create a new homewares range – Mudyin Ngurrawa, meaning ‘Family on Country’, in Dharug with new editions to the range to be launched in FY2025.
Inspired by her mother's deep history as part of the Stolen Generations and her own vibrant heritage, the Mudyin Ngurrawa collection channels Kyralee’s creativity into paintings that honour and recognise her ancestors, strongly expressing her cultural identity. The collection captures the beauty, strength and resilience of Kyralee’s heritage, and also the trauma experienced by her family.
Since it was launched, the collection has received a warm, appreciative response among team members and resonated with customers, with sales exceeding expectations.
By ranging First Nations designed products, Kmart is celebrating First Nations cultures, consistent with a focus area in the Wesfarmers Elevate RAP, knowing this helps to create safe, inclusive spaces for all of our community.
