Bunnings recognises its role in helping to support Indigenous communities by procuring products that directly benefit Indigenous organisations.

Bunnings is committed to supporting the long-term economic success of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander businesses, to help them innovate and reach their potential and create opportunities for them and their communities for generations to come.

During the 2024 financial year, Bunnings worked on projects to support Indigenous communities to utilise natural resources to bring products to market throughout its store network.

In collaboration with Circular Head Aboriginal Corporation (CHAC) and manufacturer Seasol, Bunnings worked to bring to life a new indoor fertiliser and leaf shine plant spray product called ‘tarkiner’. CHAC is an Indigenous not-for-profit organisation located in Smithton, Tasmania, established in 1994 to represent the nine Aboriginal tribes of the Circular Head region.

The natural resources for the product come from a special part of North West Tasmania called the tarkine. The peerapper Aboriginal people who are the Traditional Custodians of the land harvested 'cowerrer', or kelp, from the tarkine for thousands of years.

The collaboration supports CHAC to create employment opportunities for Indigenous people to harvest and prepare the kelp, which is the key ingredient of the indoor plant spray.

The harvested sea kelp is processed and bottled into the product by Bunnings' supplier Seasol. Seasol have also provided tactical support to enable CHAC to scope the potential to manufacture the product in future.

Bunnings and Wesfarmers provided financial support to CHAC through the Building Outstanding Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Businesses (BOAB) Fund in addition to the project support provided by Seasol.

Since June 2024, tarkiner is exclusively available at selected Bunnings stores across Australia, with proceeds supporting Indigenous communities and employment.
