Climate resilience - Towards Net Zero
In the 2024 financial
year, Wesfarmers Health adopted a target for net zero Scope 1 and Scope 2
(market-based) emissions by 2035, in part enabled by its new fulfilment and
distribution centres utilising 100 per cent renewable electricity.
To date, Wesfarmers
Health has undertaken a range of initiatives to support its targets:
Electrification:
Wesfarmers Health
completed a multi-year investment in the electrification of its material
handling equipment (MHE), such as forklifts. It has also begun deploying
rooftop solar systems in its fulfilment and distribution centres.
During the 2024
financial year, as part of a three-year project spanning API’s nationwide
network of seven distribution centres and 140 MHE, API decommissioned its last
remaining LPG powered MHE. Electrification supports Scope 1 emissions
reduction, while enabling decarbonisation as Wesfarmers Health’s distribution
centres transition to renewable electricity in future years.
Rooftop solar:
Wesfarmers Health
commenced the installation of its first rooftop solar system at its Sydney
Fulfilment Centre (NSW) in June 2024. The 1.0 megawatt rooftop solar system is
expected to reduce the site’s electricity usage and Scope 2 emissions by almost
28 per cent based on the technical specifications of the system.
Plans are in place to
install solar systems in more fulfilment and distribution centres, with a solar
array already installed at API’s new Brisbane Fulfilment Centre in Berrinba
(QLD), which is slated to open during the 2025 financial year.
