Supporting our flood and cyclone hit communities
Some of our communities across Australia and New Zealand have recently been hit by natural disasters, including significant flooding and cyclones. Our team members have been there to support communities and help relief efforts.
In January, Western Australia’s Kimberley region was ravaged by the worst flooding in the region’s
history. Our businesses joined forces to get much needed goods into the area as quickly as possible, as well as raising funds for those communities affected by the flooding.
Bunnings stores across WA, the Northern Territory and New Zealand fired up their barbecues, raising more than $50,000 for The Salvation Army’s Kimberley relief efforts and over $35,000 for the New Zealand Red Cross’ disaster response teams.
In New Zealand, Kmart donated $50,000 in gift cards and more than $25,000 of much needed products to communities affected by the effects of Cyclone Gabrielle.
In the Kimberley, Kmart donated goods including clothes, bedding and household items in the immediate aftermath, as well as vouchers for families displaced by the floods. A large donation of Target clothing was donated to the Marninwarntikura Women’s Resource Centre in Fitzroy Crossing, WA. Kleenheat assisted with gas supplies by transporting cylinders by barge to those affected communities.
Our Blackwoods business donated dehumidifiers to assist with stabilising, drying out and conserving the Ngurrara Canvas at the Kimberley Land Council headquarters in Broome. The culturally significant Ngurrara Canvas was painted by senior traditional owners of the Great Sandy Desert of northern WA as an expression of their links to country and was presented to the National Native Title Tribunal in 1997.
